His daughter, Daisy Emery Allen, wrote about his death. He was staying with his daughter Lois Wilson and her family in Roby, TX when he died on October 3, 1902.

"It was cool morning; Father sat before the fire working some mathematical problem while my sister was busy in the adjoining room. She heard him fall and, hurrying to him, she found that he had already breathed his last. His wish was granted and without the slightest indication of pain, he fell asleep." He was buried in Greenwood Cem., Dallas, Dallas, TX. He attended Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton and in 1849 entered the Sophomore class at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME. Winter 1851-52 taught at Hio School. Returned to Bowdoin and received B.A. degree in 1853. October 13, 1853 left by boat from Boston aboard the "Kepler" for New Orleans, landing November 3, 1853. Went to Marshall, Harrison Co, TX to teach but didn't find work, started a private school 60 out from Marshall. December 1, 1854 he returned to Boston, arriving on Christmas Day. Returned to Bowdoin College where he received his M.A. degree in the Spring of 1856. He received land in MN but with little success with the prairie land returned to TX. Fri, Dec. 25, 1857 arrived in Rusk Co., TX and began teaching in Bunker Hill, TX. In 1860, harrased by his neighbors "for the error in the latitude of his nativity" but more probably in persuit of another teaching position, with his wife they traveled 250 mi. to the west to Comanche Co. Tx where they settled and he began to teach school. He stated that he "dared not venture outside of town without a six-shooter, for fear of the noble red man 'slippin up' on him". In 1862 he was elected Clerk of the District Court and appointed postmaster. These two positions excluded him from the Confederate draft. Later that year he returned to Rusk Co. In 1871 he returned to Kaufman Co. where he continued to teach in the schools there."The close of the war found him the possessor of some few promises of the Confederate government, a mule slightly over the size of a wharf-rat and an exceedingly scanty wardrobe."

In listing his children, he notes that the first child was born in Texas, "United States"; the second child in Texas, "Confederate States"; the third child, Texas (doubtful)
