(From "Star Book of Doilies" Book 22 in the early 1940's). Substitutions will most certainly be necessary. I have not made this particular motif, but the picture is very pretty--although the instructions do sound a cryptic.

Materials required--American Thread Company "Star" or "Gem" Mercerized Crochet Cotton, size 20 or 30.
1-300 yard ball white or colors.
Steel crochet hook no 11 or 12.
Each Motif measures about 4 inches. 7 motifs are required for doily illustrated. Doily measures about 10 inches through the center.
Motif (1st rnd).Ch 6, join to for a ring, ch 6, dc into ring, * ch 3, dc into ring, repeat from * 3 times, ch 3, sl st into 3rd st of 6 ch loop to join. You should have 6 spaces.
2nd rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, * ch 5, sl st into 4th st from hook for picot, ch 1, 3 dc in next dc, repeat from * 4 times, picot loop and sl st into ch 3 to join.
3rd rnd:Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, * ch 5, sl st in 4th st from hook for picot, ch 5, sl st in 4th st from hook for picot, ch 1, 1 dc in each dc,repeat from * 4 times, double picot loop and sl st in ch 3 to join.
4th rnd:Ch 3, 3 dc in center dc, 1 dc in last dc, * double picot loop,1 dc in 1st dc, 3 dc in center dc, 1 dc in last dc, repeat from * 4 times, double picot loop and sl st in 3 ch loop to join.
5th rnd:Ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 3 dc in center dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, * ch 7, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, 3 dc in center dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, repeat from * 4 times, ch 7, join in 3 ch loop.
6th rnd:Ch 1, 1sc in each dc and 5 sc,ch 4, 5 sc over each loop.
7th rnd:Ch 10,skip 5 sc, sc in next sc, ch 10, skip 10 sc of scallop, sc in next sc, repeat from beginning all around.
8th rnd:Sl st to loop,ch 1, * 1 sc and 5 dc over loop, ch 5, 5 dc and 1 sc ove same loop, sc in next sc, ch 6, tr c over next loop, ch 6, sc in next sc and repeat from * all around.
9th rnd:Sl st to 3rd dc of petal, * ch 9, sc in 3rd dc on other side of petal, ch 6, dc in tr c, ch 3, tr c in same space, ch 3, dc in same space, ch 6, sc in 3rd st of next petal and repeat from * all around.
10th rnd:1 sc and 5 dc over next loop, ch 5, 5 dc and 1 sc ove same loop, ch 5, dc in next dc, ch 5, tr c in tr c, ch 5, tr c in same space, ch 5, dc in next dc, ch 5 and repeat from beginning all around joining row in sc of 1st petal.
Join motifs in the last row as follows, work 1 petal, ch 5, dc in dc, ch 5, tr c in tr c, ch 2, slip loop off hook, insert in center of corresponding loop of 1sat motif and pull loop through (all joinings are made in same manner),ch 2, tr c in tr c of second motif, ch 5, dc in dc, ch 5, 1 sc and 5 dc over loop, ch 2, join to corresponding picot of 1st motif, ch 2, 5 dc and 1 sc over remainder of loop, ch 5, dc in next dc, ch 5, tr c in tr c, ch 2, join to corresponding loop of 1st motif, ch 2 and complete row. Join all motifs in same manner.
