

(From "Edgings" Book 162 published 1941). Substitutions will most certainly be necessary. Pattern instructions are given for two colors.

Two-color edging
1st: Attach white 3/8 inch to left of one corner and work sc closely along rolled edges of handkerchief. Join with sl st to 1st sc make.
2nd: Ch 6, dc in same place as sl st, * (skip 2 sc; in next sc make dc, ch 3 and dc) 4 times. Skip 2 sc, dc in next 3 sc, ch 3, dc in next 3 sc, skip 2 sc; in next sc make dc, ch 3 and dc. Repeat from * around, having 3 dc on each side of each corner with ch -3 between 3rd and 4th dc. Join last dc to 3rd st of ch-5.
3rd: Sl st to next ch, sl st in sp, ch 7, dc in next sp, * ch 4, 3 dc in next sp, (ch 4, dc in next sp) twice. Ch 4, skip 1 dc of 3-dc group, dc in next dc, ch 4, 3-dc cluster in next ch-3 sp--to make a cluster, make 3 dc in sp, holding back the last loop of each dc on hook, thread over and draw thru all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten. Ch 4, skip1 dc of next 3 dc-group, dc in next dc, (ch 4, dc in next sp) twice. Repeat from * around, making ch 5,cluster in corner ch-3 sp and ch-5 at each corner. Join last ch-4 to 3rd st of ch-7; fasten off.
4th: Attach contrasting color to 1st sp, ch 7, * dc in next 2 sps, (ch 4, dc in next sp) twice; ch 5, 3-tr cluster in next sp, ch 3, tr-cluster in next dc-cluster, ch 3, tr-cluster in next sp, (ch 4, dc in next sp) twice; ch 4. Repeat from * around, making 2 tr-clusters in each ch-5 sp and one cluster above dc-cluster at each corner--5 clusters in all at corners. Join last ch-4 to 3rd st of ch-7. Fasten off.
5th: Attach white to 1st sp, sl st in each st to within next dc, sc in same sp as last sl st, * sc between next 2 dc, sc in next sp, ch 5, 4 dc in next sp, ch 5, dc in next sp and between next 2 clustersa, ch 4, dc in same place as last dc; between 2nd and 3rd clusters make dc, ch-4 and dc; dc in next s, ch 5, 4 dc in next sp. Ch 5, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across to within 1st corner, ending with 4 dc; ch 5, dc in next sp; (in next sp between clusters make dc, ch 4 and dc) 4 times; dc in next sp,ch 5, 4 dc in next sp, ch 5, sc in next sp, sc between next 2 dc, sc in next sp. Continue thus around. Join. Fasten off.
